Bin Collection Day

Which bin for batteries?

Usual answer in the UK

Take-back Shop or take-back point

Household batteries should never go in any wheelie bin. Shops that sell batteries usually have a collection tube, and many councils collect them on recycling day in a small clear bag on top of a bin.

Also possible: Special collection or specialist disposal; Household waste recycling centre (the tip).

How to prepare it

Tape over the ends of lithium batteries and button cells before you drop them off.

Common mistakes

Batteries in bins and recycling cause fires in bin lorries and sorting plants.

Does every council do this?

Most councils follow the answer above, but bins and sorting rules are set locally, and a few councils still do things differently. If your bin has a sticker, or your council sent a leaflet, follow that. Enter your postcode to go straight to your council's guidance.
